Just as a word of advice, you should not make your own picture frame. The first few times you try making your own frame are going to be a nightmare especially if you are using sub-par tools. Since you are persistent and are still reading this article here are the tools you are going to need.
Your will need to begin with the essentials of every frame which are the uncut frame itself, the glass, the matting, and the mounting.
Digital Picture Frames
To cut the frame you will need a wood saw and a miter box. You must have the miter box or you are certain to fail.
You should use pre-cut glass if possible. It is not that expensive and is impossible to do yourself without the right tools. If your picture is not too valuable you can make the frame without the glass and it still looks really nice.
For the matting you will want to buy a knife specifically designed for cutting matting so that you get the exact 45 degree angle that you should have for the matting. However, if this is not available then a razorblade will work if you have a steady enough hand and can cut at a 45 degree angle. You should buy acid free matting when possible, and you should not use white for your first attempt as it is incredibly difficult to keep clean during the process.
You need a back to your picture and you should mount it if possible. Technically you could do this with cardboard or some other kind of backing if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of quality in the process.
To start building the picture frame itself you should cut the frame to the specifications of your picture and leave enough room for the matting. You can connect the four corners of the picture frame by using 2 small screws on each corner each pointed in the opposite direction. Make sure that all your measurements are perfect to less than a centimeter if possible.
Next you will add the glass itself. Pre-cut glass and a frame specifically designed for pictures will already have the groove necessary to insert the glass. Again, measurements are everything here.
After that you should cut your matting to the exact size of the glass. It is acceptable to be smaller than the glass as the frame should be a little bigger than the glass itself. Make sure you cut the picture hole in the matting at a 45 degree angle with a matting knife if possible. A razor blade is not recommended, but it is possible.
Finally, add your picture and make your backing. The backing should be the same size as the mat and the glass. This should be by far the easiest part of the process.
Once you have the backing in place, you can use brackets to hold the backing in place. One final step is adding either a hanging string or hanging brackets. This should be easy enough as well. Finally, after all this hard work you have made a picture frame. Not to worry; it will be easier the second time you make a frame.
